From May to September 2008 Poleng's team developed a non-commercial, pilot version of Lex Translatica , a program for machine translation of company and partnership articles of association, for Wolters Kluwer . Lex Translatica is the first machine translator for technical text in a specific field.
Lex Translatica is based on publicly available company and partnership articles of association as well as other company law agreements, legislation and documents. The linguistic data were processed using specially-developed solutions, such as a Polish to English parallel corpus, allowing for, among other things, verification of translation quality. The technical vocabulary extracted from the corpora, verified for frequency on the Internet, was processed and entered in the program's dictionary by our lexicographers. Their task was to verify the existing dictionary entries, add new terms, phrases and idioms, abbreviations and the most frequent sentences. As we added much up-to-date vocabulary, e.g. concerning the administrative division of Poland, as well as some rare terms (e.g. zstępny - descentant), absent in the general dictionary, Translatica's dictionary grew significantly. A positive side-effect of our work on Lex Translatica, we managed to improve translation quality significantly by altering the rules of the system.
